Tips For Women

Electronics

Built using an Arduino microcontroller and audio shield, this interactive tip jar offers a critique of sexism in technology by offering text-to-speech “tips” for women sourced from twitter. A user inserts a coin into the box as payment and receives a “tip” in the form of a real-world tweet, containing the phrase “women need to” followed by a strangers wisdom. The tweets, which range from abusive to prescriptive, containing expletives, beauty advice, inspirational quotes and more, represent a snapshot of the noise women are confronted by when seeking equal access to the digital commons in the form of social media platforms like twitter.
